"First of all, there's no need to panic. When sharks approach the coast, they cause alarm, which is, however, unjustified because no attack on humans has ever been documented on the Mediterranean coast. Nevertheless, their presence, as well as that of rays, is fundamental to the future of the marine ecosystem. Now, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recognized the value of coastal areas throughout the Mediterranean Sea that possess the ideal conditions to guarantee the survival of these species, 'among the most threatened in the world.' A total of 65 ISRAs (Important Shark and Ray Areas) have been designated, fourteen of which (20% of the total) are located in Spanish waters. One of these is the Marina Alta coastline, both north and south of Cabo de la Nao, as can be seen on the attached map."
