Shark Specialist Group Workshop Timeline

As part of the IUCN Red List methodology, Red List training and assessment workshops are organised. At Red List training workshops, scientists and experts are trained in applying the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria and the Regional Guidelines to conduct the species assessments.

Assessment workshops have been identified as the most cost-effective method of peer-reviewing species assessments. They are an important part of the Red List assessment methodology, as these workshops greatly improve the quality of the assessments through the input of additional data and peer reviews, and thereby fill any data gaps in species knowledge. The Red List Categories given to the species are agreed upon by consensus among the group of scientific experts, therefore making the assessments robust and consistent.
